About the San Andreas Fault Jeep Tour
This guided Jeep experience with Red Jeep Tours takes families into the heart of the San Andreas Fault zone near Palm Desert. Students travel by open-air Jeep through dramatic canyons and badlands, explore a slot canyon on foot, visit a natural palm oasis, and learn how tectonic plate movement has shaped the landscape over time. Along the way, a naturalist guide introduces the geology, plants, animals, and cultural history of the region.
Historical & Geological Overview
The San Andreas Fault marks the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. Over millions of years, movement along this fault has fractured rock layers, uplifted ridges, formed deep canyons, and influenced the pattern of springs and oases in the desert.
During the tour, students also learn about the Cahuilla people, who lived in and around the fault zone and made use of desert plants, groundwater, and natural shelters to build a sustainable way of life in a challenging environment. A recreated Cahuilla village and interpretive displays help connect geology, water, and culture.
