About Safari West

Safari West, located in Santa Rosa, offers a unique and educational experience by providing an authentic African safari adventure right in California. Known as the "Sonoma Serengeti," this wildlife preserve is home to over 900 animals from more than 90 species, giving visitors an opportunity to observe and learn about diverse wildlife in a naturalistic setting.

Historical Overview

  • Foundation: Safari West was founded in 1993 by Peter Lang, a former Hollywood animal trainer, and his wife, Nancy. Their vision was to create a sanctuary for exotic wildlife and to promote conservation through education and immersive experiences.

Key Features and Exhibits

  • Safari Tours: The heart of the Safari West experience is the guided safari tours. Visitors can embark on open-air vehicle tours across the 400-acre preserve, encountering giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and other African species. Knowledgeable guides provide educational commentary on the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts.
  • Aviary: The preserve features a large aviary housing a variety of bird species, including flamingos, cranes, and parrots. The aviary offers a chance to observe these birds up close and learn about their behaviors and natural environments.
  • Primates and Small Mammals: Safari West is home to several species of primates and small mammals, including lemurs, cheetahs, and warthogs. These exhibits emphasize the diversity of wildlife and the importance of protecting their habitats.
