(SOLD OUT) MacKerricher State Park Field Trip

This 2 hour experience offers a deep dive into the distinctive ecosystems of tidepool creatures and harbor seals. Students will actively engage in discovering and categorizing common tidepool inhabitants, understanding their unique adaptations, and acknowledging potential threats to these delicate environments. A central focus will be on comprehending the concept of Marine Protected Areas and their significance in safeguarding oceanic spaces.

Students will explore the MacKerricher State Park tidepools to find and identify common tidepool creatures, their unique adaptations, and potential threats to this fragile habitat. During this time, students will learn what a Marine Protected Area is and why these protected areas of the ocean are important.

Students will walk the Laguna Point Boardwalk to a harbor seal rookery for a live viewing of MacKerricher’s year-long marine mammal residents. Here, students will use binoculars to observe the seals in their natural habitat. Together, there will be a group discussion on what the students observed and why they believe certain physical or behavioral traits may be helpful to the survival of this animal. During this time, students will work together to identify the 5 major traits all mammals share, the challenges marine mammals face (natural and human caused), and what we can do to help the ocean and the amazing animals that call it home.

There is also a possibility for the students to earn their Jr Ranger badges on this trip.

Important Info

• AGE/GRADE REQUIREMENTS: K-12. Children K-2 will need individual parental support as the tide pools are slippery and take some coordination to traverse. 
• ALLERGY ALERT: Please let us know right away if your student has a food allergy so we can make any necessary arrangements to better protect them
• CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: Once a field trip is SOLD OUT or has reached it's cut off date, we are unable to offer refunds.
• CHAPERONE POLICY: A parent chaperone is required to be present with their student on our field trips regardless of student age or grade level. Upon registering you MUST INCLUDE all attending, including any additional parents/chaperones or siblings.
• FOOD/DRINK RESTRICTIONS: Food and water is permitted. 
• MEETING INSTRUCTIONS: A week prior to this event, we will be sending out an email with meetup instructions.  
• PARKING INSTRUCTIONS: There is room for one vehicle per family/student/chaperone.
• SICK POLICY: Please do not attend a field trip if you or your student is sick or showing possible signs of illness.
• RELEASE OF LIABILTY: When registering, make sure to read and understand the Release of Liabiliy Policy before submitting your order
• High surf conditions will change the availability of this trip. 

Camping Information

Group campsites at Mackerricher will not be operational during the time of our scheduled trip. The good news is that there are plenty of individual campsites available at Mackerricher State Park itself. This will allow you to still enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, various recreational activities, and still have the group camping experience. We encourage you to consider reserving these individual campsites as they become available in October. We will send out an email in October as a reminder for those wishing to camp, to reserve their spots. The email will include important camping information, dates and suggestions on sites to remain close to the group if you wish.

Please Note If Camping:

• Please dress appropriately for the weather. If there is rain, we will still be going ahead with the camping portion of the trip. Please plan and dress accordingly. Coastal weather can fluctuate so bring enough bedding and clothing to be comfortable. It can also get windy so be sure to bring plenty of layers. It is always wise to bring an extra set of clothing and towels as we will be spending some time exploring and playing near the beach.
• Please bring sunscreen. 
• Each family and/or student/gaurdian is responsible for thier own food and camping equipment for the duration of their stay. 
• There is potable water, campfire rings, showers (fee required), firewood available for purchase and picnic tables. There is cell reception at the campground and there are several stores within a 5 minute drive if you forgot any groceries or supplies. 
• Campsites are a short walk to the beach.
