The park embraces parts of two distinct deserts—the Mojave and Sonoran—as it tumbles down from the heights into the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs. These two desert systems divide California's southernmost national park into two arid ecosystems of profoundly contrasting appearance. The key to their differences is elevation. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California.

The park’s namesake is the Joshua Tree, a member of the agave family with a distinctive appearance. The Joshua Tree was revered by American Indian tribes because its leaves provided durable materials for baskets and footwear, while the buds and seeds made a healthy addition to their food supply.

Come explore for yourself.

Keys Ranch Tour

Come learn about the cultural history of Keys Ranch.

Joshua Tree National Park acknowledges the 15 associated tribal communities as the original stewards of the land on which Joshua Tree National Park now sits and respects the people past, present and emerging who have been here since time immemorial. This area can only be visited with a ranger. Ranch tours last 90 minutes and involve about a half-mile of walking.
